Raw Breakdown 18/2/13

John Cena & CM Punk Segment

I’ve trying to wrack my brains around why anyone in Cena’s shoes would possibly want to put their Wrestlemania title shot on the line and not have their opponent put something of equal importance on the line as well.

But that’s John Cena, he’s got to be portrayed as a hero. The whole scenario is hopefully just a way of working CM Punk into the Wrestlemania main event. At least I hope so anyway. Expect next weeks match to have a disputed finish in some form or another that would lead to triple threat match.

The most disappointing part about this segment as was clearly shown by the reaction of the crowd was that we were going to have to wait a week to see this match. I’d be angry if I paid to see a show that just spending its time hyping up next weeks show.

Mark Henry def. Sin Cara

I hope for Mark Henry’s sake that he hasn’t been lumbered with Khali as his Wrestlemania program. What a way to kill his momentum by having him try to work with a ‘wrestler’ who can barely walk.

It does nothing for Henry’s image either. We’ve seen countless guys half the size of Khali defeat him with little trouble that we know ‘The World’s Strongest Man’ should have no trouble.

The Miz def. Antonio Cesaro

Great to see some hardcore action on Raw, it doesn’t happen enough any more that somehow it becomes a treat. Cesaro’s chair to the throat looked particularly painful.

You can see why they have Miz constantly fight with these ‘injuries’ as it makes him look courageous and like a true fighter. A complete shift from his old self as he tried to win over all the ‘Mix girls’ and boys out there.

Alberto Del Rio def. Dolph Ziggler

It’s a testament to Ziggler’s abilities that he was booked in a match in which he was beaten quire comfortably and yet he scan still come out looking great. Mainly due to his amazing abilities to be able to sell moves so well.

As much as I want Ziggler to successfully cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase I was surprisingly happy he didn’t this week. I just feel that with the current gimmick that Swagger and Colter have, going against a Mexican in Alberto Del Rio could make for a very compelling and emotive storyline that has a lot of potential.

Wade Barrett & Sheamus Segment

Have the WWE forgotten about No Dallas or are they changing their mind and teasing a feud with Sheamus. Personally, as a Brit, I’d love to an Englishman take on an Irishman at Wrestlemania.

If not, what a wasted opportunity to give Bo some more airtime and develop their story.

Brodus Clay, Tensai & Naomi def. Epico, Primo & Rosa Mendes

Great to see a proper tag team on the show, not so great to see them get beat by a tag team with a short shelf life that is nothing that a laugh for a couple of weeks.

State of the Union Address

This gimmick is really starting to grow on me. I was unsure at first as I was worried some people in the audience would agree with them, but so far their being roundly booed. It’s also great to see that even with PG programming WWE isn’t worried about being a bit edgy at times.

There’s nothing really racist with what Colter says, its unfair on immigrants of course, the majority are hard working.

The Shield def. Jericho, Sheamus & Ryback

Just like Cena at Elimination Chamber, it looks like Sheamus could have stopped the winning pinfall. Time will tell whether Ryback growing frustration at being let down by his team-mates will lead to a heel turn. Having said that I was expecting to see Jericho turn on one of his team-mates at some point during the match.

Another impressive showing by The Shield. Their really gelling well as a team and you can tell they put a lot of effort into their team maneuvers. Their really grasping their opportunity to impress, I just hope they can inspire some of the other wrestlers on the roster to give that little bit more.

Kofi Kingston vs. Damien Sandow

Looks like we could be seeing a new, more aggressive side to Sandow. Probably a wise move, you can have all the intelligence in the world, but it’s how you put it into practice that makes you dangerous.

Randy Orton def. Kane

Presumably this is all leading up to a Wrestlemania match between the two. It’s a shame in a way because the tag team division has more than deserved a place at Wrestlemania, but it does seem to be receiving less and less attention as the weeks go by.

As for Randy, it looks like he’ll in yet another afterthought of a Wrestlemania match that will be barely promoted. If he gets that judging by the way things are going.

Paul Heyman, Vickie Guerrero & Vince McMahon Segment

The first announcement as made by Vickie was that she now has a assistant, whatever you want to call him, it’s all rather confusing at the moment. Although, you can see why Vickie would want to hire Maddox to get back at Heyman, why would someone who has spent so much time trying earn a contract as a active wrestler suddenly be interested in some management role. It doesn’t really make sense.

Its not as if Vickie gets much air time as it is without having someone else be in a position of power to make decisions. The role of General Manager has become diluted with all these assistants that you could assume that everyone on the roster the an equal amount of power. Get Vickie back doing what she does , and that’s managing a wrestler, not a roster.

The second announcement was the fight between Mr. McMahon and Heyman, again next week, cue the sound of crickets on the crowd. This will likely be an underlying storyline that sooner rather than later see Triple H take on Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania.

The Rock’s Celebration

Finally, they’ve got rid of what JBL called a ‘bling bling sideshow of a belt’ despite being glad to see it go I was always worried that they were going to unveil something uglier, bit in hindsight that wasn’t possible.

What did reveal looks like a sedate version if the older title was less ‘diamonds’ and a bigger WWE logo on the front panel much like they did with the NXT Title. There are also Brahma Bulls on both side panels. I hope that is just personalised to whoever is the champion at the time. Personally I would rather have globes and wrestler s in a tie.up on the side as it looks more credible and traditional, but this the way the world is going.

All in all, I’m pleased with new belt I think there’s a good balance that should please the traditionalist’s and the younger audiences.
